News from your Officer Team:
Your Leadership Team has a great year planned for Texas BPA. They will be working on their goals and leadership training in June. Their plan for the year and goals will be posted here.
Running for Office:
Texas BPA has seen an increased interest in student leadership and as a result an increased number of candidates running to represent Texas BPA as Regional, State and National Officers. While accommodating the increased number of candidates has proved a challenge, we know this is an excellent problem to have. To streamline the election process this year, the Election Committee has revised our election process for State and National Officer Candidates to provide for candidate pre-screening and interviews to occur prior to SLC.
Please take time to review the new process and ensure that candidates meet the requirements before moving to the next part of the election process. NOTE: Regional deadlines and procedures will be set by your Regional Advisor and may vary from the Regional Officer Handbook.
STATE AND NATIONAL OFFICER ELECTIONS:
Our Officer Application deadline has passed. Officer candidates should have gotten information in regards to next steps. We are looking forward to the new process this year. Because of weather delays, the Officer Timeline has been modified as follows:
- The officer candidate test will be open, beginning on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 and will end on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. Your login information has been sent to you along with the testing procedures.
- Interviews begin Friday, January 26, 2018. The dates and time will be relayed to those candidates who have submitted their packets.
- Further information will also be released to the students who have submitted their packets. Candidates can send any questions to the Officer Elections Committee at
email@example.com . Best of luck to all candidates!
PIN AND T-SHIRT DESIGN WINNERS:
Congratulations to the following Pin and T-shirt Design Winners. These pins will be used to trade at this year's National Leadership Conference in Dallas. The T-shirt will be used as our conference t-shirt at the State Leadership Conference. The winners will be recognized at the Special Recognition Awards Ceremony at SLC on Wednesday evening. Thank you to all of our talented graphic artists for your submissions.
Texas Intern Program:
Apply to be a Texas BPA Intern at the State Leadership Conference. The link to the online application can be found here:
https://tinyurl.com/txintern2018 . Once you have applied, join the Remind: Text @txintern18 to 81010. Students can report to the intern desk at any time during the conference and will be sent to the areas where they are most needed. This priority assignment style will be used this year to ensure that we have coverage at peak times. Note: Intern orientation and other items will follow. At the end of the conference, Interns can get their hour sheet and certificate signed to document their service. We appreciate you sharing your students with us!

Social Media’s Influence on College Admissions:
Social media is not the wave of the future. Social media is the now and present way people are looking at top recruits for jobs and especially at college recruits. Negativity could be a perception that comes to mind when thinking about social media and college admissions, but it doesn’t have to be. In a recent article published by CNN, they found that social media positively impacts the college admission process.
Thirty-five percent of 365 college admission officers surveyed admitted to reviewing college applicants’ social media accounts (CNN. 2017). Students who use their social media accounts to help tell their story and post valuable and notable information helps colleges build a more rounded picture of who that student is.
Through each unique eCourse, Social Assurity will address the importance of building a positive and productive social media presence, as well as how the permanence and discoverability of an individual’s digital footprint can help, rather than obstruct, future academic and professional pursuits. To access more information about the free eCourse visit the Social Media Essential page on BPA.org.
Be sure to check out the full article about Social Assurity and how social media affects college admissions on CNN’s site at
